Connecticut Tigers' pitcher Chase Edwards continued his struggles in 2015 by being shelled for 9 earned runs and 11 hits in just 2.1 innings in Connecticut's 10-2 loss to Staten Island Sunday afternoon. The loss more or less killed the Tigers chances at winning the Stedler Division (as the team is now 4.5 games behind Tri-City.) The Tigers still have a faint chance at a Wild Card berth (trailing West Virginia by 3.0 games.) Tiger catch Shane Zeile cracked his team lead tying 6th homer for the Tigers in defeat.

The Connecticut Tigers won their third straight game Friday by shutting out the Lowell Spinners 1-0 at Dodd Stadium. Tiger starter Spenser Watkins was brilliant, tossing 7 shutout innings, giving up just 3 hits, while striking out 7 and walking none. Reliever Jake Shull made it interesting in the bottom of the 9th but held on to claim his 7th save. The Tigers only run came in on a balk in the first inning.
The win puts the Tigers into a tie with Lowell for second place in the Stedler Division, just 2.5 games behind first place Tri-City (who lost in Vermont.) The Tigers are also tied with Lowell for 4th place in the NY-P Wild Card race (just 2 GB first place West Virginia.)

On the one year anniversary of Franklin Navarro's game winning grand slam over Lowell in 2014, the Connecticut Tigers once again took their season off life support with a dramatic 3-2 win in the bottom of the 12th inning at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.
The game was deadlocked after the 11th inning, before Lowell scored a go ahead run in the top of the 12th. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame with hits by Jose Zambrano, Will Allen and finally a two run game winning double by first baseman to seal the win.
It was a scenario that was eerily similar to last season's heroics by The Tigers. Prior to Navarro's game winning slam, the Tigers' post season hopes were about to be terminated. Following the win, the Tigers trailed first place Tri-City by 5 games and wild card leader Brooklyn by 2 games. With last night's win, the Tigers trail first place Tri-City by 3.5 games and second place Lowell by 1.0 game. Connecticut trails West Virginia in the wild card race by 3 games.
Credit must go to the Tigers team, for not playing out the string after their team was gutted by recent promotions. The Tigers still have an uphill climb but they still have a puncher's chance to make the post season (if the team is not further decimated by promotions down the stretch.)
The Tigers also passed the 60,000 mark in attendance Thursday night.

Tigers' Pitching Shelled By Tri-City In 13-6 Blitz Tuesday Night
It would appear that the Connecticut Tigers' 2015 post-season hopes have come to a close. The Tigers' decimated pitching staff couldn't hold a 5-0 lead and eventually gave up 13 runs in a Tuesday night blitz that put the Tigers 5.5 games behind the Stedler Division leading Tri-City Valley Cats. The Tigers' weary pitching staff took another hit with the promotion of effective reliever Nate Fury.

Eugenio Suarez Comes Out On Top In CT Tigers' Alumni Rumble Monday Night In Cincinnati
2011 CT Tiger SS Eugenio Suarez blasted his 9th HR of 2015 against 2013 CT Tiger pitcher Buck Farmer to begin a 10 run inning in the Reds' 12-5 win over the Detroit Tigers Monday night in Cincinnati.
Buck Farmer got the upper hand early by blanking the Reds for 4.1 innings (not giving up a hit until the 5th inning.) Eugenio Suarez put the Reds on the board with an impressive solo blast off Buck Farmer to lead off the 6th inning. The Reds would eventually chase Farmer and would go on to score 10 runs in the frame.
Monday's game saw appearances by four former CT Tigers (Suarez with Cincinnati), two of Eugenio's 2011 teammates LF Tyler Collins and RHP Guido Knudson (also the aforementioned 2013 CT Tiger Buck Farmer.)
Eugenio Suarez was traded to Cincinnati with 2013 CT Tiger Jonathon Crawford this past off season and has turned out to be a real find for the Reds. Suarez seemed like a man on a mission against his old team Monday night. Not only did he homer off Farmer, he hit a two run double off his former Connecticut teammate Guido Knudson and later singled (driving in three runs on the night and driving his average back over the .300 mark,)

The CT Tigers' roster took another hit over the weekend, when All Star reliever Drew Smith and hard throwing (but erratic) Gerson Moreno were promoted to Class A West Michigan.
Their roster spots were filled by RHP Ryan Milton and LHP Locke St. John.
Tiger Bullpen Implodes Again In Crucial 7-6 Loss At Tri-City Monday Night In Troy, NY
As good as the Connecticut Tigers' bullpen was in 2014, it has been just as bad in 2015. None of the 2015 Tigers' late inning pitchers has stepped up to get the job done in 2015. The Tigers' best bullpen arms Nate Fury and Drew Smith were strangely not used very much in crucial late inning spots (Smith is now gone from the team) which makes an already weak bullpen that much worse.
Reliever Jake Shull blew his second crucial game in the past 2 weeks Monday night at Tri-City. The Tigers fought hard to rally and tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the 9th, only to have Shull toss the game away in short order in the bottom of the frame. The loss more or less puts any Tiger plans of a second straight post-season berth to rest (the Tigers now trail Stedler Division leaders Tri-City by 4.5 games.
The Tigers still have an faint chance at a wildcard berth (trailing State College by 3.5 games. However, with the Detroit brass gutting the Tigers' roster of it's best players on a seeming daily basis, that seems a pipe dream at best. One can certainly understand the team promoting players on a team that is out of contention but not on a team that is right in the middle of a post-season pennant race. One thing that you'll notice with Tri-City, is that they virtually have the same roster as they had in late June. One can only dream of where the Tigers would be if their roster hadn't been decimated by promotions.

Former 2011 CT Tiger Eugenio Suarez Looks A Potential All Star With Reds
Former 2011 CT Tigers' SS Eugenio Suarez continues to impress with the Cincinnati Reds and is showing signs he can be an NL All Star in the not so distant future. Through 51 games with the Reds, Suarez is hitting .311 with 7 homers and 29 RBI's, with 12 doubles and 1 triple. In hindsight, the Detroit Tigers should have never let Suarez go (former Tiger manager Jim Leyland was a huge supporter of Eugenio.)

It's pretty safe to say, that Friday night's 9th inning meltdown was one of the worst losses in Connecticut Tigers' history.
The Tigers were flying high after Monday night's blowout of the Auburn Doubledays in Norwich. The team was in great shape heading into a three game series against Stedler Division basement dwellers the Vermont Lake Monsters in Vermont. Well, the Tigers have come back to earth with a thud and are now in danger of falling into the cellar themselves.
The Tigers desperately needed a win Friday night after two uninspired losses in Vermont on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday's Tiger starter Sandy Baez was up to the challenge and pitched his heart out (easily his best start as a Tiger.) Untouchable Tiger reliever Drew Smith was his usual great self (pitching a scoreless 7th inning.)
However, then things started to fall apart. Hard throwing but extremely erratic Tiger reliever Gerson Moreno almost gave the game to Vermont in the 8th but somehow managed to escape with giving up a run. Then closer Jake Shull came in for the 9th and threw the game away, giving up a walk and three hits (including a game winning three run homer to Chris Iriart of Vermont.)
This loss is a brutal one and could send the Tigers reeling out of contention. It leaves one wondering why Drew Smith is not in there closing games out (especially a pivotal one like Friday's game.) These decisions are most likely out of manager Mike Rabelo's hands but the idea is to win, isn't it?
If the Tigers do come up short in 2015, people will always look back to Friday's loss in Vermont (the loss sort of brings to mind Logan Hoch on the final day of the 2010 season.)

2010 CT Tiger Jeff Ferrell Reaches The Major Leagues
Former 2010 Connecticut Tiger RHP Jeff Ferrell was promoted to the Detroit Tigers on July 4, 2015. Ferrell had collected 12 saves for Class AA Erie in 2015 (he pitched in 2 games with the 2010 Connecticut Tigers and had a record of 0-0, 4.26 ERA)
Tigers Brett Pirtle Promoted To High Class A Lakeland
For the second straight season the Connecticut Tigers lost one of their key offensive parts, when hot hitting second baseman Brett Pirtle was promoted to High Class A Lakeland of the Florida State League. Pirtle was hitting .333 at the time of his promotion. It appears Patrick Mackenzie will see the bulk of the time at second base for the Tigers down the stretch.
